The Truth According to Wikipedia

What is your reaction to this video? What do you agree/disagree with? What are some things you learned from it? Are any questions arising from this for you?

“Truth According…” notes

  • Are we ready for the tech saavy age?
  • Maybe we need to slow down? (maybe we need to be more critical of our sources of information)? Who are the experts? Who are the amateurs? When do we need to make sure who provided the information?—See Mike’s and Dan’s and Maria’s comment (values wiki info)
  • How big will Wiki get? Can it be stopped?
  • Perhaps there needs to be better configuration and classification of information. What sort of re-structuring could improve the issue at hand? Is Wikipedia hampered by the fact that it is taking on such copious information?
  • Is Wiki a good place to start research (basic)?--verify its statements.
  • Is there is room for both camps of thought?

Serving Those in Need: A Primer for Ethos, Pathos, and Logos

Describe an experience you've had helping someone or others in need. Describe the environment, your feelings, and details of people (imagine their feelings).

Now, describe a moment when you have come into conflict with the desire to help someone in need and your own obligations or needs? If this does not apply, describe a moment when your ethics or values were compromised.

*Remember: Don't write about anything you are uncomfortable discussing with the class.

Preparing for the Library Visit - Ideas for Essay #2

Generating Ideas for Essay #2

First, take a couple minutes to think about two or more controversial issues within your major or subject of interest you want to research. Start your blog comment and type out some ideas if you like.

Second, open up a new window on your browser and access our library homepage>career finder to browse specializations in your field of interest.

Third, go to our library homepage and access the online research database (EBSCOhost, lexisnexis, academic search complete, etc. Can you find sufficient articles for your research? When you have, make sure you open the pdfs and skim them. To document your sources, e-mail yourself the title web pages of each one with the button provided on screen.

Back to the Blog...

Fourth, and now that you are on to something, give examples of sub-topics you may want to explore. List some questions to articulate this. What do you want to find out?

Finally, write out a question that encapsulates your controversial issue.

Example from my field: Should college English composition classrooms teach video essays?

Example of area of interest: How long will the world's oil reserves last?
